This article deals with the evolution of the competition between 'habeo' and 'mihi est' in possessive and experiential constructions from Latin to Romanian. Unlike other Romance languages, which have generalized 'habeo' in both types of constructions, Romanian maintains both forms. Based on theoretical advances on the role of the concept of functional competition in linguistic change, we argue that the competition between 'habeo' and 'mihi est' in Romanian settles in terms of differentiation, each of the two forms specializing in different functional domains. We conduct an exploratory but pioneering diachronic corpus study to test this hypothesis in the light of quantitatively examined empirical data. Cet article porte sur l’évolution de la compétition entre habeo et mihi est dans des constructions possessives et expérientielles du latin au roumain. Contrairement aux autres langues romanes, qui ont généralisé habeo dans les deux types de constructions, le roumain maintient les deux formes. Sur la base des acquis théoriques sur le rôle du concept de compétition fonctionnelle dans le changement linguistique, nous avançons que la compétition entre habeo et mihi est en roumain se fixe en termes de différentiation, chacune des deux formes se spécialisant dans des domaines fonctionnels différents. Nous menons une étude diachronique sur corpus, exploratoire mais pionnière, afin de vérifier cette hypothèse à la lumière de données empiriques examinées quantitativement.
